Green bristle grass – information and weed control

Setaria viridis (Green bristle grass) is an annual gramineous weed, with pseudospikes, green like grass, which develops scattered bushes. It prefers soils that are low in calcium, light, rich in nutrients, found in warm regions.

The straws are thin, glabrous, geniculate when raising vertically, with heights between 15-60 cm. The true leaves are glabrous, quite wide (4-10 mm), gradually ending with a sharp tip, slightly tight at the base, the young leaves are rolled, the leaf sheath is glabrous and the ligules are transformed into a crown of hairs.

Green bristle grass flower is in the form of monofloral spikelets, having at the base an involucre made up of long hairs. The spikelets are linear, hairy, green, or yellowish-green, developed in pseudospikes that exceed the upper leaf when reaching maximum development, having a length of 2-8 cm.

The germination season is at the beginning of summer.

The flowering period is from summer to early autumn, with the plant producing between 400-800 seeds.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the crop.
