Fruit trees – Planting Guide

planting-fruit-trees-guide

For the proper development of the fruit trees, it is important that the planting of the trees is done at the optimal times, taking into account certain aspects.

How to choose the planting material

The quality of the planting material is an important condition for successful planting. It is recommended that the planting material come from authorized nurseries or authorized traders. Also, the trees must have a healthy, intact root system and a straight stem. For proper subsequent development, avoid trees with open wounds, traces of pests, undeveloped roots, or those without vigor.

Optimal moment for planting

The planting of fruit trees can be done in autumn (at the beginning of the dormancy period), in early spring (at the end of the dormancy period), or in winter, if the temperatures are positive and the soil is not frozen.

Planting trees in the fall comes with several advantages. Wounds from pruning heal more easily, and in some cases, new roots develop. Also, due to the rains during this period and the snow during the winter, the necessary humidity is ensured, and the roots come in contact with the soil earlier. Trees planted in autumn start growing faster the following spring.

Spring planting can be done when autumn planting could not be done. The trees are planted in early spring when the soil isn’t frozen anymore. Immediately after planting, the soil is watered abundantly to help the trees get through the following period of drought.

Land preparation for planting trees

The planting place will be chosen according to the environmental requirements of the tree to be planted (light, humidity, soil). If planting is to be done in the fall, the planting hole should be prepared in the summer, and if planting is to be done in spring, the planting hole should be prepared in the fall or winter (if the soil isn’t frozen). The size of the holes must provide enough space for the roots to be placed in a normal position.

Preparation of planting material

Trimming. It represents the removal of damaged, dried, necrotic, or moldy roots and the shortening of healthy roots. The tertiary roots that are 1-3 mm thick, are shortened to 7-8 cm. The primary roots must be as long as possible, but they can be shaped in case of wounds, by shortening the root above the wound. The trimming aims to obtain a healthy and branched root system.

The trimming is done with well-sharpened tools, perpendicular to the root axis, to cause minor wounds, which can be easily healed.

Mudding the roots. It represents the covering of the roots with a layer made of a mixture of soil, water, and fresh manure. Through dipping, the aim is to maintain the humidity at the level of the roots and to speed up the healing of the wounds resulting from shaping. It favors better success when planting, by ensuring a good contact of the roots with the soil.

Immediately after mudding, the trees will be planted to prevent the mud from drying out on the roots.

Planting the fruit trees

Before planting the trees, a mixture of fertile soil removed from the top side of the planting hole and well-decomposed manure is introduced at the base of the hole, to ensure the good development of the roots. The tree is placed on the fertile layer at the base of the hole, taking care that the roots are scattered and straight, and the grafting point remains above the ground level.

The roots will be covered with the remaining soil from the surface. To avoid air pockets and to ensure the close contact of the roots with the soil, the soil needs to be packed from the edge towards the center. Filling the hole to the ground level is done with soil obtained from the base of the hole, after which, it will be carefully packed. Before the winter, a 30 cm mound can be raised around the tree, having the purpose of protecting the roots from frost. The tree can also be covered with rodent protection materials.

Care works after planting trees

Watering. After planting the trees and packing the soil, it is recommended to apply 1-3 buckets of water (depending on the tree’s requirements) to each hole. In the first year after planting, the soil should maintain a moderate humidity, it should be kept damp, avoiding excessive moisture that can lead to the suffocation of the roots.

In spring, the soil around the trees can be covered with mulch. By mulching, weeds control is assured, water is conserved in the soil and a good phytosanitary environment is maintained.

Staking. A stake can be inserted next to the young tree, to ensure its additional support.

Fertilization. Fertilization can be done depending on the requirements of each species, the degree of soil supply with nutrients, ecological factors, etc. After planting the trees, rooting hormones can be administered. The trees also react well to foliar fertilizers.

Pruning. One of the most important works on fruit trees is pruning. For seed species (apple, pear, quince trees), pruning can be done in autumn, after the leaves fall, or in winter, if the temperatures allow it. In the case of stone fruit species (peach, cherry, apricot trees), pruning can be carried out after the frost has passed and until entering the vegetative growth period. The cuts ensure a balance between growth and fruiting.

Tips

  • It is important to plant fruit trees only during the dormancy period;
  • In order to destroy the crust from the soil’s surface and to remove the weeds, in the spring-summer period, 4-6 hoeings are recommended;
  • Around the trees planted in spring, you can make a little ditch around and fill it with water. After removing the weeds, the soil has to be leveled and mulched;
  • After planting, during the dormancy period, it is recommended to carry out treatments with oils and copper-based products.
