Field bindweed – information and weed control

Convolvulus arvensis (Field bindweed) is a perennial weed, with numerous deep taproots, with many growth buds on the new roots. It grows in almost all types of soil, but especially in warm and drier soils, light and permeable.

The stem is either laying on the ground or clamberer, thin, branched, truncated with 6 edges, and with a height of up to 120 cm.

The cotyledons are broadly elliptical, reniform to rectangular. They have a length of 8-10 cm, which exceeds the width. The cotyledons are strong, with glabrous edges and a long petiole. The main and secondary ribs are obvious.

The true leaves are triangularly ovate, alternatively arranged, glabrous, with a rounded tip and a full edge.

Field bindweed flower is in the form of a funnel, solitary along the length of the stem, with a long stalk, 2-3 cm in diameter, and has at its base two linear bracts, positioned far from the flower. They are light pink or white with five red outer streaks.

The flowering period takes place from early spring to late autumn, and the plant produces about 500 seeds.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the concerned crop.
