The Fairy fan-flower (Scaevola aemula) is a perennial plant that grows in the form of a small shrub, originally from Australia. It has a compact growth, reaching up to 30 cm in height. The leaves are elliptical to oval, green, with a serrated edge. The fan-shaped flowers appear at the topside of the stems and are blue in color. The plants bloom from early summer to autumn.

The Fairy fan-flower is grown directly in the garden, being a plant tolerant to high temperatures, but it can also be found in flowerpots or flower boxes.

Environmental conditions

Light. The Fairy fan-flower requires 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. It is recommended to place it in bright spaces, but it can also tolerate partial shade.

Temperature. It grows and blooms at temperatures between 21-30 ℃. It also tolerates higher temperatures. Conversely, temperatures lower than 15 ℃ can affect flowering and growth.

Soil. It thrives on medium fertile, but well-drained soils. It is recommended to avoid compact, heavy soils that retain moisture. For flowerpots, you can opt for a universal substrate.

Fairy fan-flower – care

Watering. The plants can be watered occasionally, depending on the rainfall. It is recommended that the soil is mostly dry before watering again. Frequent watering and too wet soil can lead to root rot.

Fertilizing. The Fairy fan-flower does not require much fertilizing. During the growing period, a balanced fertilizer for flowering plants can be administered monthly.

Recommended products

Read carefully and follow the instructions on the label of each product

Pruning. It does not require drastic pruning. To correct its shape and to help the plant to branch, light cuts can be made.

Propagation. It is propagated by stem cuttings, harvested at the end of summer. The cuttings are rooted in protected spaces, to be planted in the garden in the spring, when there is no longer any danger of frost. The Fairy fan-flower can also be propagated by seeds, but it is a more difficult process.

Additionally:
  • The Fairy fan-flower cannot withstand frost. The plants grown in flowerpots can be moved indoors during the winter;
  • Flowering can stagnate on cool summer days;
  • Although they are perennial plants, they are usually grown as annual plants.
