Eggplant Phytophthora blight (Phytophthora capsici) – identify and control

Eggplant-downy-mildew-identify-and-control

Phytophthora blight is a widespread disease that affects eggplant crops.

Symptoms. The affected leaf has large, yellow, oily spots, characteristic of downy mildew. On the underside of these spots appears a whitish fuzz that contains mycelium with spores. The attack on the fruit is manifested in the form of large brown spots, near which the tissues sink. In conditions of high atmospheric humidity, the spots expand, unite, and the leaves rot.

The pathogen is Phytophthora capsici. The fungus resists in the soil in the form of resistance spores, in plant debris. During the growing season, the fungus is transmitted through spores that are found in water. In the greenhouse, optimal conditions for infection are achieved in autumn in September-October, and in polytunnels, the eggplant downy mildew is dangerous from May when temperatures are generally lower and the differences in temperature between day and night cause condensation of water vapor on the vegetative organs of plants.

Prevention and control. As a preventive measure, it is recommended to apply a rational crop rotation. Avoid cultivating eggplants near potatoes and tomatoes, do not harvest seeds from attacked fruits. In the autumn, all the plant debris must be burned, after which a deep plowing will be done.

In the greenhouses, the plant debris will be destroyed, and the soil will be changed or disinfected with specific products.
