Deutzia, planting guide and care work
Deutzia is a genus of about 60 species of flowering shrubs in the Hydrangeaceae family. They are native to Central and East Asia, Central America, and Europe. Most species (approx. 50) are found in China. They have heights between 1 and 4 m, most have deciduous leaves, but some species in the subtropical climate have persistent foliage. The leaves are placed oppositely on the branches, are simple, and have a serrated edge. The flowers grow in clusters or corymb inflorescences. In most species, they are white, but can also be pink or reddish. The fruits are capsules that contain many seeds.
The name of the genus comes from the name of the 18th-century Dutch botanist Johann van der Deutz. Due to its rich flowering, it is planted ornamentally in parks and gardens, as isolated specimens or in groups, sometimes even in the form of hedges.
Species and cultivars
Deutzia gracilis is a species native to Japan, in the form of a small shrub, 0.7-1 m tall. It develops straight and thin tendrils. The leaves have a lanceolate shape and are light green in color. It blooms in May. The inflorescences are in the form of a panicle, small, growing upwards. The flowers are star-shaped and white. Cultivars:
‘Nikko’ – a thick bush; it blooms abundantly. In autumn, the leaves become tile-colored.
Deutzia scabra is a shrub native to Japan and China, it grows vigorously, up to 2.5-3 m and it is very branched. It has oval or lanceolate leaves, with a crenate edge and a rough surface. It blooms in June-July, forming terminal panicles of white, pink flowers. Cultivars:
‘Candidissima’ – it forms compact panicles of white flowers.
‘Plena’ (‘Pride of Rochester’) – it forms flowers with narrow and dense white petals, carmine red on the outside.
‘Codsall Pink’ – the flowers are double, fragrant, white, with a pink exterior.
Deutzia x lemoinei is a hybrid species, with short stature and a bushy appearance. It develops simple, white flowers.
Deutzia x rosea is a bushy, compact shrub, with a height of 1 m. It forms bell-shaped flower panicles, light pink in color, with a red exterior.
Deutzia x magnifica has double, pale-pink flowers, which grow in compact, rounded, panicles.
Environmental conditions
Light. They have no special requirements for light, withstanding both direct sunlight and partial shade.
Temperature. There are plants that prefer a warmer climate. D. gracilis is sensitive to frost.
Soil. They grow well in damp soil, well-drained, rich in humus. In general, they are drought resistant.
Watering
It should be done so that the soil dries on the surface before you water it again.
Fertilization
For the rich growth and flowering of the shrub, it is recommended to administer a specific fertilizer during the vegetative growth period.
