Creeping buttercup – information and weed control

Ranunculus arvensis (Creeping buttercup) is a herbaceous species, annual or biennial, very common in the humid areas in mountain meadows, in swampy places, and on the waterfront.

The stem is straight, finely pubescent, branched at the topside, having a height of 20-60 cm.

The cotyledons are long, oval, fleshy, in cross-section semi-cylindrical, oblong, sessile, greenish-brown, and purple at the base.

The true leaves are pinnate with lobes with large incisions, the basal ones having long petioles, with palmate leaflets, longer than wide, serrated towards the top. The upper leaves have short petioles or are sessile, with narrower, lanceolate leaflets.

Creeping buttercup flowers are yellow, actinomorphic, with 5 obovate petals and 5 hairy sepals, with numerous stamens. They are clustered in loose terminal inflorescences.

The flowering period is in summer, with the plant producing between 800-1000 seeds.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the crop.
