Couch grass – information and weed control

Agropyron repens (couch grass) is a perennial gramineous weed, with white, underground, crawling rhizomes.

It grows in almost all types of soil but especially in more fertile, compact soils, rich in nutrients.

The straws are straight, smooth, round, from 20 cm to over 100 cm high.

The cotyledons are small, slightly rolled towards the edge, usually reddish at the base.

The true leaves are up to 5 mm wide, often slightly rolled; the leaf sheath is smooth, generally bare; the ligule is very short, spiky, finely lacy.

Couch grass flower is in the form of small, fragile spikes with spikelets placed in two rows. The spikelets develop 1-8 flowers. The bracts are sterile with the base thickened.

The germination season is spring, and the germination depth is up to 20 cm.

The flowering period is summer or sometimes until autumn, the plant producing between 50-1000 seeds.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the crop concerned.
