Common sowthistle – information and weed control

Sonchus oleraceus (Common sowthistle) is an annual weed with a taproot that produces latex. It prefers humic soils, rich in calcium, well supplied with nutrients. Common sowthistle can be found in agricultural crops and hayfields, in fertile and brightly lit soils.

The stem is straight, thick, branched, with a height of up to 80-100 cm.

The cotyledons are round, usually with a curved side, with flat lobes, colored in light green, with a full edge and petioles.

The true leaves are almost circular with fine serration, the next ones being sessile, pinnate or not, colored in blue-green, surrounding the stem, with hairy serration.

Common sowthistle flower is a light yellow or greenish-yellow inflorescence, consisting of convex capitulum and peduncles without glandular hairs.

The flowering period is from summer to autumn, and the plant produces between 4000-5000 seeds.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the concerned crop.
