Common ragweed – information and weed control

Ambrosia artemisiifolia (Common ragweed) is native to North America but is also widespread in Canada, the United States, and Northern Mexico. It can also be found in Europe and Asia as an introduced species and is known as a common weed in several regions. This species is well known as a harmful weed, both in its native area and in the areas where it was introduced and became an invasive species. It grows in many types of disturbed habitats, such as roadsides, and also in cultivated fields. The plant is destructive to native and cultivated plants.

The stem is strongly branched, growing up to 2 meters high, but can reach 6 meters in rich, moist soils.

Common ragweed leaves are palmately lobed. Most of the leaves are oppositely arranged.

The flowers are unisexual, the species being hermaphroditic (monoecious) with inflorescence-bearing plants that contain both pistillate flowers and staminate flowers. The first are clustered at the top’s base and the latter develop at the end of the year.

The fruit is a burdock a few millimeters long ending in several small spikes.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the crop.
