Published on: February 1, 2022 Modified on: 26 April 2024

Portulaca oleracea (Common purslane) is a plant that can reach a height of 40 cm. An annual weed, often lying on the ground, but also with the possibility of sprouting vertical stems with a taproot. It prefers light soils, rich in nutrients, and sandy soils found in warm areas.

The stem is cylindrical, fleshy, but hard, often reddish and strongly branched, often lying on the ground, with a height of 10-30 cm.

The cotyledons are long, oval, fleshy, in cross-section semi-cylindrical, oblong, sessile, greenish-brown, purple at the base.

The true leaves are thick, alternatively arranged, dark green, sessile, oval to cuneiform, glossy, fleshy.

Common purslane flower is barely visible, with a yellow perianth, without any peduncles, solitary or in small groups, placed in the axils of the leaf.

The germination season is in summer, and the germination depth is usually 1-3 cm.

The flowering period is from summer to autumn, with the plant producing between 800-1000 seeds.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the crop.
