Wisteria is a genus of flowering plants in the family Fabaceae (Leguminosae), native to eastern Asia and the eastern United States. The genus comprises about 10 species of climbing, woody-stemmed plants, most of which are ornamental. They can grow up to 20 m tall and spread over areas up to 10 m wide. They are found in parks and gardens, covering columns, supports, walls, and pergolas. The largest wisteria in the world is found in Siera Madre, California, was planted in 1894 and measures about 0.4 ha. The genus was named by botanist Thomas Nuttall in memory of Dr. Caspar Wistar.
