Outdoor plants
Sumac species (genus Rhus) are cultivated for ornamental purposes and for ecological purposes (stabilizing steep slopes, ecological reconstruction). The very large leaves and the colorful and persistent fruit inflorescences give them a special ornamental value. Due to these characteristics, the sumac has been planted in parks, gardens and tree lines in most countries with a temperate climate.
Planting
It is recommended to be done in autumn or spring. For a successful planting, it is recommended to dig a hole of optimal size, so that the roots are placed loosely and covered with enough soil.
Soil
It presents great adaptability in terms of the soil. Thus, it can be cultivated on poor, calcareous, sandy soils, or even on slightly salty ones. It is often planted on degraded land, to fix slopes and for ecological reconstruction, to strengthen slopes, etc.
Light
The sumac is a light loving plant, growing normally in conditions of abundant light. It can also be planted in partial shade, and sometimes it is also found under the crown of taller trees.
Watering
It needs occasional watering during dry periods.
Fertilisation
For optimal growth and development, the administration of specific fertilizers during the vegetative growth period (in spring-autumn, especially in the case of poor soils) is recommended.
