Spiraea (meadowsweets) is a genus comprising about 80-100 species of shrubs in the family Rosaceae. They are native to the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere. Most species are found in eastern Asia. They are deciduous shrubs, the leaves grow alternate and are arranged spirally. They are lanceolate in shape and have a serrated, sometimes slightly lobed edge. Flowering differs from species to species, some species flower in spring, others in mid-summer. They are planted for ornamental purposes, in parks and gardens, as solitary specimens, in groups, massed, like hedges. Because of its salicylate content, it is used to extract salicylic acid and produce aspirin.
