The ornamental hazel is a broad-leaved shrub species (rarely a tree up to 10-20 m tall), belonging to the genus Corylus of the Betulaceae family. It has round or semi-round leaves with irregular margins (serrate) and pointed tips. The pendulous flower buds of the male flowers can easily be seen in early spring, before the leaves appear. The fruits are achenes with woody skin and an edible core.Â
