The leaves are caducous, elliptic-obovate, with an obtuse tip, 2-4 cm long, with a narrow base and a finely serrated edge. The yellow flowers are grouped in pendent racemes of 4-6 cm. The fruit is a red-purple berry. This species is the intermediate host for the fungus Puccinia graminis (black rust).
