Hippeastrum and Amaryllis are bulbous plants of the Amarylliadaceae family. Both names have Greek origins, Hippeastrum translates as “knight’s star” (hippeus – knight; astron – star), and Amaryllis is the name of a nymph in Greek mythology and translates as “shining”. The flowers are similar to lily flowers, and often the two plants are confused or even considered the same species. However, there are a few differences between the two that are easy to spot.
