St John’s-wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one of the oldest known medicinal plants. The underground part is represented by a short rhizome and the stem is tall, reaching up to 100 cm. The leaves are opposite, sessile, and the flowers are dipped in a corymb.
The terminal part of the plant is the one with therapeutic properties, called Herba Hyperici. In the form of teas, it is used in hepatobiliary and gastric diseases. Externally it is used in the treatment of wounds. St John’s-wort is also used in the beverage industry in the preparation of liqueurs.
