Fruit trees
The medlar (Mespilus germanica) is a shrub-like fruit tree and belongs to the Rosaceae family. The leaves are large, elliptical, with a short petiole. The flowers are almost sessile, white, and they appear successively on the top of some short shoots. The fruit is a false drupe, maroon, with large, persistent sepals.
Planting
The optimal planting period is autumn.
Soil
The medlar prefers clayey, sandy or medium (loamy) soils. It grows well in fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soils.
Light
Being a light-loving species, the medlar is planted on well-lit lands, with rows oriented towards north-south.
Watering
Irrigation is necessary during the dry and hot periods of the growing season.
Fertilisation
Medlar responds positively to regular fertilization during the growing season.
Harvesting
The harvesting of medlar fruits is done after the occurrence of hoarfrost. The fruits become edible after a period of 3-5 weeks of storage.
