Callistemon, plant care and growing guide

callistemon

Callistemon is a genus of shrubs in the Myrtaceae family, native to Australia. Called “bottlebrush”, it is a fast-growing shrub, the leaves are elliptical and the flowers have a cylindrical shape, the flowering process begins in spring and summer. The color of the flowers varies depending on the species, most are red, but can also be yellow, orange or white.

Environmental conditions

Light

Callistemon species prefer to be placed in sunny areas and do not like shade, which reduces the flowering process.

Temperature

They are heat-loving species, so high temperatures are suitable for them. Frost or low temperatures for a long time affect the plants.

Humidity

Originating from areas with low atmospheric humidity, these species prefer such conditions, but can also grow in conditions of high humidity.

Soil

It prefers light and very well loosened soils that allow the root system to develop optimally. The soil should be slightly acidic to neutral, while alkaline soils can cause the yellowing of the leaves. Also, the water drainage capacity must be high, because water stagnation can induce root rot.
