Brugmansia, planting guide and care work
Brugmansia (Brugmansia arborea), popularly called the “angel’s trumpet”, is a shrub native to South America (Ecuador, Chile, Colombia). The plant can be grown both in pots and in the garden. Brugmansia can reach a height of 3-8 meters in its natural environment. The leaves are alternatively arranged (on either side of the stem), ovate, and can reach lengths of 30 cm.
The name “angel’s trumpet” is given by the shape of the flowers. The flowers are trumpet-shaped, and droopy. Some varieties can reach a length of 50 cm. They can be white, red, orange, yellow, etc. They give off an intense fragrance in the evening.
Species and varieties
1. Brugmansia aurea – it is native to Venezuela and Ecuador. The plant can reach a height of 6 meters. The flowers are white or yellow, and pleasantly fragrant.
2. Brugmanisa insignis – it is native to Colombia and Bolivia. The flowers are funnel-shaped, large, fragrant, pink. Towards the top, the corolla forms tendrils.
3. Brugmansia suaveolens – it is native to Brazil and has white, yellow, or pink flowers, while the leaves can reach 25 cm in length.
Environmental conditions
Light. Brugmansia grows and develops in bright areas and can withstand direct sunlight and, also, partial shade. Shaded places can negatively affect the flowering process.
Temperature. The plant prefers moderate temperatures. The optimum range is 15-28° C. In winter, it is recommended to be protected from negative temperatures and frost. Potted plants can be moved indoors during the cold season.
Substrate. It prefers fertile soils that provide good water drainage. For pots, peat-based substrates are recommended.

Watering
During the period of growth and flowering, it requires a larger amount of water. It is also recommended that the substrate dry slightly before you water the plant again. During the winter, the plant should be watered less often.
Fertilization
During the vegetative growth period, you can add liquid or slow-release fertilizers.

Repotting
It can be done in spring. The pot can be replaced with another, larger one, and it must have holes for water drainage. At the same time, it is indicated to change the substrate or the soil from the surface.
Propagation
Brugmansia can be propagated through seeds or cuttings obtained from shoots. The seeds should not be sowed deep in the soil because they need light to germinate.
The seedlings can have a length of 15-20 cm and be rooted in water glasses. The water in the glass has to be replaced every day. Immediately after the root formation, they can be moved to a pot.
Diseases and pests
Brugmansia can be affected by diseases such as fusarium wilt and powdery mildew. It can also be affected by viruses and bacteriosis.
Among the pests, the most common that infest the plant are whiteflies, mites, and aphids.

In addition
- the angel’s trumpet (Brugmansia) is related to Datura, the difference being in the flowers’ position and the plant’s size. The flowers have a drooping position in the case of Brugmania and a straight, upwards-oriented position in the case of Datura. Brugmansia can reach a height of 8 meters, Datura can grow up to 1 meter.
- all parts of the plant contain tropane alkaloids, which are toxic to humans and animals.
