Black leg of cabbage (Leptosphaeria maculans) – identify and control

black-leg-of-cabbage-treatment

Black leg of cabbage, Leptosphaeria maculans was first reported at the end of the 18th century in Germany.

Symptoms. The young plants attacked even from the seedlings phase show circular or irregular discoloration spots on the first 2 leaflets. Small black dots appear on the yellowish areas. If the stem is attacked, a thinning of it is observed at the base, accompanied by a blackening.
The tissues rot dry, and the young plants break off. On more developed plants, yellowish, circular spots appear on the leaves, up to 2 cm in diameter, and if there are favorable conditions of high humidity, the spots can merge and the leaves dry out.

On the thicker stems, the diseased, blackened areas show slightly deepened tissues, bordered by a greyish-brown stripe. Inside this stem, caverns filled with a whitish mold appear. The roots of the affected plants rot and the plants dry out.

The greatest damage is recorded in seed crops where symptoms of the attack can also appear on the fruit. They will no longer produce seeds or the seeds will be depreciated, with small, black spots, without germination capacity.

Black leg of cabbage pathogen resists from one year to another in the attacked plants debris and in the infested seeds. During the vegetation period, spores are carried away by rainwater, wind, insects, or irrigation water.

Prevention and control. The establishment of the crops will be done starting from healthy seed and seedling, produced in protected areas well disinfected with specific products.

If symptoms appear, foliar spraying with specific fungicides is performed.
