Apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) – identify and control

apple-scab-disease-control

The apple scab, Venturia inaequalis is the most widespread disease in all countries where apple trees are grown. It is found in all fruit-growing regions. It is considered one of the most damaging diseases of the apple tree, due to massive crop losses, both quantitative and qualitative.

Symptoms – the apple scab

All the young organs of the apple are attacked (leaves, flower sepals, fruits, and young branches).  At the beginning of the attack, more or less circular, greyish spots with an imprecise outline are observed on the leaves.

The spots color is given by the fungus mycelium, which develops radially under the cuticle, around the point of infection. Later, with the formation of the asexual part, the patches acquire a brownish-brown color and velvety appearance.

The attack on the flowers, especially on the sepals, is similar to the one described on the leaves. The fruits are attacked from a young age to maturity. Grey-olive spots can be seen on the fruits, alongside which the tissues become suberized and crack. The young fruits strongly deform and their mesocarp is tasteless. Often the cracks on the fruit are the entry points for Monilinia fructigena spores, as well as for other fungi that destroy the flesh completely.

Leaf-like spots appear on young branches. The fungus is responsible for a light exfoliation on the branches’ surface, and under the infested tissue, a suber layer is formed which separates the healthy part from the infested one.

The pathogen is Venturia inaequalis. The fungus overwinters in the fallen leaves as perithecia, and also as mycelium inside the bark. The disease is favored by high humidity in the form of heavy rain or an atmosphere saturated with water vapor.

Prevention and control. It is recommended to gather, burn and plow deeply in autumn to reduce the source of infection. also, to prune and burn the branches affected by apple scab, and to cultivate resistant apple varieties.
During the vegetation period, it is recommended to apply treatments with specific fungicides.
