Angular leaf spot (Phaeoisariopsis griseola) – identify and control

bean-angular-leaf-spot

The angular leaf spot on beans, Phaeoisariopsis griseola, is observed more frequently in humid areas, where it causes serious damage.

Symptoms – angular leaf spot

The infestation of the beans occurs on the leaves and fruits. On the upper part of the leaves, during the summer, small, gray, or brown, angular-shaped spots appear bordered by veins. On the underside of the leaves, near the spots, numerous small brown spots can be observed, which represent the pathogen’s sporulation. In humid regions, the infestation is severe and produces the plant’s withering and premature defoliation. The infestation occurs on the pods too, in the form of small and angular spots.

The pathogen is Phaeoisariopsis griseola. Its transmission from one year to another is done through the resistance mycelium, the form in which the fungus overwinters in the plant debris. The spread of the pathogen during the vegetation period is done through conidia.

Prevention and control. To prevent pathogen attack, preventive measures are recommended, such as collecting and destroying plant debris left on the field after harvest, crop rotation with the return to the same field after at least 3 years. For chemical control of the pathogen, treatments with specific fungicides are recommended.
